If you're a student, a thesaurus can be an incredibly helpful tool. If you'd like to learn how to employ it effectively, continue reading.

How to Use a Thesaurus Correctly

Know When to Use It

The first step is learning when exactly you should crack open your thesaurus. This can be, for example, when you're repeating a word over and over in an essay, or when you're trying to formulate the correct way to express yourself.

Learn to Search

Depending on the type of thesaurus you have, you will need to learn how to search in it. For example, if you have an alphabetical thesaurus, you can search in it like you would in a dictionary. If you have an online thesaurus, type in the word you want to replace. If you have a Roget-type thesaurus, employ the correct method.

Understand Context

Even though a word may be the synonym to another, it can totally change the meaning of the message you're trying to transmit. That's why, before you choose a replacement word, you need to understand how context will change it, and if it'll fit your message.

Proceed With Caution

Last but not least, if you want to use your thesaurus correctly, you need to do it with caution. For example, don't use a replacement word without knowing its meaning. Likewise, avoid overusing your thesaurus because, once again, you could be putting your message in jeopardy.
