The Tutoring Center, Navarre FL

We all know the importance of ensuring your children excel academically, but do you know that it is also important to ensure their creativity is fostered? Increasing the creativity of your children will allow them to be more diverse, expressive, and well-balanced. Creativity also aids in increasing brain function, and can quite often show itself in academics. Though it may appear that certain people are more naturally inclined to creative efforts, creativity is a learned trait, which can be fostered or stifled out. At The Tutoring Center in Navarre we would like to share a few simple tips to help you foster the creativity of your child.

As adults, we have a tendency to focus on what we will get out of completing something. We think about whether it will be worth it, how much time it will take, and what the end result is. Of course, there is room for that. However, in the creative process for your children you should attempt to Focus on Process not the Product. Ask your child how he or she feels throughout the process. What part did they or are they enjoying most? Why they used a particular color? What they think about the texture of the paint?

Surely you should provide your child with the essentials, like a box of crayons, poster board, paper, paint, the norms. You are also given an opportunity here to Be Creative in Choosing Mediums for your child. If you want him or her to be environmentally conscientious, try reusing and repurposing old items, for example.

Remember that here we are specifically talking about fostering the creativity of your child, and in this process it is important to try to limit external constraints. What we mean by this is to allow your child to explore creating with different materials, figuring out what he or she likes, coloring the duck blue if they choose to color the duck blue, that sort of thing. We do NOT mean allowing your child to write or draw all over the walls if it is likely a rule in your home that should not.

Expose your child to Diverse Cultural Experiences. Not only is this fun for them, but also fun for you. Take them to museums, show them different art styles, cultural celebrations, music, even films. The more they understand about art in its forms, the more creative they will grow to be on their own.

As you are helping to foster the creativity in your child, you might find that they are much more interested in the creative process than in academics. If this is the case, don’t fret. Remember that academics should come first, and perhaps their creative time can serve as a reward. The Tutoring Center is here to aid your child in his/her academic endeavors.
